Mountain Gorilla Safari: Uganda & Rwanda Guide, Costs & Best Tours 2027
Plan a private mountain gorilla safari in Uganda or Rwanda with the right permit, trekking location, lodge and route. Compare 2027 permit costs, the best gorilla parks, trek difficulty, luxury options and safari itineraries that combine gorillas with chimpanzees, wildlife and beautiful East African landscapes.
A mountain gorilla safari is one of Africa’s most distinctive wildlife journeys because it cannot be experienced everywhere and it is very different from a conventional game drive. Mountain gorillas live in a small part of east-central Africa, and most international travelers who want a well-established trekking experience plan around Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park or Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
The gorilla encounter itself is only one part of a successful safari. The permit must be secured for the correct date, accommodation needs to match the trekking location, transfer times must be realistic, and the itinerary should leave enough time for the forest experience rather than treating the trek as a quick add-on. This is especially important in Bwindi, where different trekking sectors sit on different sides of the forest.
Tavira Africa Safaris designs private mid-range and luxury mountain gorilla tours in Uganda and Rwanda. Travelers can focus entirely on gorillas or combine trekking with chimpanzees, savannah wildlife, golden monkeys, Lake Bunyonyi, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Akagera National Park, Lake Kivu and other destinations.
Choose Uganda if you want stronger permit value, several trekking areas and easy combinations with chimpanzees and classic wildlife parks. Choose Rwanda if you want a compact trip from Kigali with premium accommodation and shorter road transfers. If you have enough time, a combined Uganda–Rwanda gorilla safari can provide both styles in one journey.
Mountain Gorilla Safari at a Glance
Where Can You Go on a Mountain Gorilla Safari?
Mountain gorillas survive in two isolated populations: one in Uganda’s Bwindi ecosystem and another across the Virunga volcanic landscape shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. For most international travelers planning a practical safari today, Uganda and Rwanda provide the established routes Tavira recommends.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi is Uganda’s best-known gorilla destination and has four principal trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Each sector has separate access and nearby accommodation, so lodge choice should follow the confirmed permit location.
Bwindi is ideal for travelers combining gorillas with Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale or Lake Bunyonyi. See our Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Guide.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga lies in the Virunga Mountains near Kisoro. Its volcanic landscape and smaller tourism footprint make it appealing for travelers who want gorillas combined with golden monkeys and the southwestern highlands.
It also works naturally with Kigali-starting itineraries and Lake Mutanda or southern Bwindi stays.
Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda’s trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park. Its biggest advantage is logistics: travelers can reach the gorilla region from Kigali without the long road journey associated with many Entebbe-to-Bwindi trips.

Uganda Wildlife Authority’s revised tariff effective 1 January 2027 lists standard gorilla tracking at US$800 for foreign non-residents, US$700 for foreign residents, US$500 for Rest of Africa visitors and UGX 300,000 for East African Community citizens. Visit Rwanda currently lists the standard international permit at US$1,500 per person per day.
| Permit | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Uganda FNR – 2027 | US$800 | Bwindi or Mgahinga standard tracking |
| Uganda FR – 2027 | US$700 | Eligibility proof applies |

UWA suspended the former seven-day unpaid reservation window from 1 March 2026. Operators now secure permits through full payment at booking, so travelers should be ready to confirm promptly when the correct date and trekking location are available.
What Happens on Gorilla Trekking Day?
The exact hiking time cannot be guaranteed because gorillas move naturally through the forest. Uganda Wildlife Authority describes treks as potentially lasting roughly two to seven hours, with one hour of viewing once the habituated family is located.
STEP 1
Briefing
Permit validation, ranger briefing and allocation before entering the forest.
STEP 2
Forest Trek
Follow rangers and trackers through natural terrain toward the assigned family.
STEP 3
Gorilla Hour
Observe feeding, resting and social behavior under ranger supervision.
STEP 4
Return
Hike back and keep the rest of the day flexible for recovery.
How Difficult Is a Mountain Gorilla Safari?
The safari around the trek can be very comfortable, but the forest walk is a genuine outdoor activity. Difficulty depends on the gorillas’ location, rainfall, altitude, terrain and individual fitness. Some travelers may walk a relatively short distance; others may spend several hours on steep, muddy or uneven ground.
Moderate fitness helps. Wear sturdy walking shoes, long trousers, long sleeves and lightweight rain protection. A porter can be particularly valuable because carrying a daypack becomes more tiring on steep ground, and the extra support can make the trek more comfortable.
Travelers with mobility concerns should discuss them before booking rather than assuming every trek is easy. Tavira can advise on route design, lodge location and the overall pace surrounding the trekking day.
Best Time for a Mountain Gorilla Safari
Gorilla trekking operates throughout the year in Uganda and Rwanda. Drier periods are popular because some trails may be less muddy, but rain is possible at any time in these mountain forests.
JUNE–AUGUST
Popular Dry-Season Window
Strong for combining gorillas with savannah wildlife, but high-demand permits and lodges can fill early.
DECEMBER–FEBRUARY
Another Popular Period
A useful window for travelers combining gorillas with a wider East African holiday.
GREEN SEASON
Wetter Months
Expect richer green scenery and muddier trails. Uganda introduced low-season permit rates in 2026 for April, May and November, but the applicable offer should be reconfirmed for the actual travel year.
How Much Does a Mountain Gorilla Safari Cost?
The permit is only one cost. The final safari price also depends on private transport, accommodation, meals, driver-guide services, the number of travel days, border arrangements and whether domestic flights are included.
Tavira focuses on private mid-range and luxury safaris, so we prefer accurate date-specific quotations over unrealistic headline prices.

Luxury Mountain Gorilla Safari
Luxury does not change the official gorilla trekking rules or guarantee an easy trek. It changes the experience around the trek: lodge location, room quality, dining, privacy, service, private transport and the option to fly closer to the forest.
In Uganda, luxury travelers can use high-end forest lodges around Bwindi and domestic flights toward Kihihi or Kisoro depending on the permit sector. Rwanda offers a compact premium lodge circuit near Volcanoes National Park and convenient access from Kigali.
A luxury gorilla safari is especially valuable for honeymoons, special occasions, older travelers who want to reduce road time and guests who want the lodge to be part of the experience rather than simply a place to sleep.
Mountain Gorilla Safari from Kigali or Entebbe
Best for Short Trips
Kigali is ideal for Rwanda gorilla safaris and can also be an efficient gateway to southern Bwindi or Mgahinga. Cross-border immigration requirements must be considered when entering Uganda.
Best for Longer Uganda Safaris
Entebbe works naturally when gorillas are combined with Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo or other Uganda parks. Domestic flights can reduce road time for short premium itineraries.
Gorilla Habituation Experience vs Standard Trek
Uganda also offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi. Standard tracking is designed around locating an already habituated family and spending approximately one hour observing it. The habituation experience is a separate conservation tourism product involving researchers and habituators and is intended for travelers seeking deeper involvement in the habituation process.
Under Uganda Wildlife Authority’s tariff structure effective 1 January 2027, the foreign non-resident Gorilla Habituation Experience is US$1,800. Availability is limited, so this should be planned early.
| Experience | Standard Trek | Habituation |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Wildlife viewing | Deeper habituation context |
| 2027 Uganda FNR | US$800 | US$1,800 |
| Availability | More widely available | Much more limited |
What to Pack for a Mountain Gorilla Safari
Pack for wet mountain forest conditions rather than a normal city holiday. The most useful items are sturdy walking shoes, long trousers, long sleeves, rain protection, long socks, a hat, a small daypack, drinking water, personal medication and manageable camera equipment.
For a complete checklist, read our Uganda Safari Packing List.
How Far in Advance Should You Book?
Book as soon as your travel dates are reasonably firm, especially if you want a specific Bwindi sector, a premium lodge, a domestic flight or several permits on the same day. Permit availability and lodge availability should be planned together.
Best Booking Sequence
1. Confirm approximate travel dates and trip length.
2. Check gorilla permit availability.
3. Confirm trekking location or sector.
4. Match accommodation to the permit.
5. Finalize private transport, domestic flights and safari extensions.
Why Book a Private Mountain Gorilla Safari?
A private safari gives the traveler control over the journey around a fixed permit date. Tavira can build transfers, lodge choices and wildlife extensions around your own group rather than a shared departure schedule.
Private Vehicle
More flexibility for stops, photography and daily timing.
Correct Logistics
Accommodation and transport are matched to the permit location.
Flexible Pace
Keep post-trek time relaxed or add more wildlife when it suits you.
Mid-Range or Luxury
Choose the comfort level that matches your priorities.
