Uganda Gorilla Safari Guide 2027: Costs, Permits & Planning Tips

Everything you need to know before planning a Uganda gorilla safari: where to trek, how permits work, what a 2027 trip costs, the difference between Bwindi and Mgahinga, when to travel, what to pack and how to combine gorillas with the rest of Uganda.

A Uganda gorilla safari is usually planned around mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The trek is the highlight, but the quality of the trip depends on several decisions made before you ever enter the forest: which park or sector your permit is for, where you stay, how you reach the area, how many nights you allow and what other destinations you combine with the trek.

Uganda is especially strong for travelers who want more than a single primate experience. A gorilla safari can be combined with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park, golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga and scenic relaxation around Lake Bunyonyi.

This guide is written as the informational companion to Tavira Africa Safaris’ main Uganda Gorilla Safari page. Use this article to understand the details, then use the main safari page when you are ready to compare actual tour options.

Uganda Gorilla Safari Quick Facts

Main Parks

Bwindi & Mgahinga

These are Uganda’s two mountain gorilla trekking parks.

2027 Permit

US$800 FNR

Standard Uganda gorilla tracking for foreign non-residents under UWA’s 2027 tariff.

Minimum Age

15 Years

Current UWA rules set the minimum gorilla tracking age at 15.

Ideal Trip Length

3–10 Days

Three days works for a focused trek; longer itineraries allow wildlife, chimpanzees and lakes.

Bwindi or Mgahinga: Where Should You Trek?

Both parks offer mountain gorilla trekking, but they suit slightly different safari plans.

Best All-Round

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi has four major trekking sectors—Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo—which gives travelers more accommodation and permit options. It is the natural choice for many first-time Uganda gorilla safaris.

It combines easily with Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Bunyonyi. For deeper sector planning, read Tavira’s Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Guide.

Best for Virunga Scenery

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga lies near Kisoro in the Virunga Mountains and feels more volcanic and open in character than Bwindi. It is an excellent choice when the itinerary also includes golden monkey trekking.

See our Golden Monkey Trekking in Uganda guide for that combination.

How Uganda Gorilla Permits Work

A gorilla permit is tied to a specific date and trekking location. In Bwindi, that location matters because the sectors sit on different sides of the forest. Booking a lodge before confirming the permit can create unnecessary road transfers on trekking morning.

The safer order is: choose approximate travel dates, check permit availability, confirm the trekking sector, then reserve accommodation in the correct area.

Important booking update

Uganda Wildlife Authority suspended the former seven-day unpaid permit reservation window from March 2026. Full payment is now required to secure the permit, so travelers should be prepared to confirm once the correct date becomes available.

Uganda Gorilla Permit Prices for 2027

UWA’s revised tariff effective 1 January 2027 lists the following standard gorilla tracking fees.

Category 2027 Permit
Foreign Non-Resident US$800
Foreign Resident US$700
Rest of Africa US$500
East African Community Citizen UGX 300,000

Rates and eligibility rules can change, so Tavira reconfirms the current official tariff before requesting payment.

What Happens on Gorilla Trekking Day?

The day begins at the correct park headquarters with permit validation and a ranger briefing. You then enter the forest with rangers and trackers. The hiking time varies according to the gorillas’ location, terrain and weather.

STEP 1

Briefing

Meet park staff and learn the rules before entering the forest.

STEP 2

Forest Walk

Follow rangers through natural terrain toward the assigned family.

STEP 3

Gorilla Encounter

Standard tracking provides approximately one hour with the habituated family after it is located.

STEP 4

Return & Rest

Hike back and keep the rest of the day flexible for recovery.

How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

Difficulty cannot be guaranteed in advance. Some treks are relatively short while others involve several hours on steep, wet or uneven forest trails. UWA notes that trekking can take roughly two to seven hours depending on where the gorillas are found.

Moderate fitness is helpful. Wear sturdy walking shoes, long trousers, long sleeves and lightweight rain protection. A porter can be useful for carrying a daypack and assisting on difficult sections.

The current minimum age for gorilla tracking in Uganda is 15 years.

Best Time to Go on a Uganda Gorilla Safari

Gorilla trekking operates throughout the year. Drier months are popular because some trails may be less muddy, but rain is possible at any time in the mountain forests.

JUNE–AUGUST

Popular Dry-Season Window

Good for combining gorillas with Uganda’s wildlife parks, but high-demand dates can fill early.

DECEMBER–FEBRUARY

Another Popular Period

Works well for travelers planning a broader East African holiday.

WETTER MONTHS

Lush Green Conditions

Expect more rain and mud. Any promotional permit rate should be reconfirmed for the actual travel year.

What Does a Uganda Gorilla Safari Cost?

The permit is only one part of the cost. Your total also depends on the number of travelers, accommodation standard, vehicle, trip length, starting point and whether you add domestic flights or other parks.

A short private trip can be efficient, but longer itineraries often provide better value because the transport cost is spread across more experiences.

3 DAYS

Focused Trek

Best for travelers whose main priority is one gorilla trek.

5–7 DAYS

Gorillas Plus Wildlife

Adds Queen Elizabeth, Lake Bunyonyi or golden monkeys.

8–12+ DAYS

Complete Uganda Circuit

Best for chimpanzees, wildlife, gorillas and slower pacing.

Uganda Gorilla Safari from Kigali or Entebbe?

KIGALI

Best for Short Southwestern Trips

Kigali can be an efficient gateway to southern Bwindi and Mgahinga. It is particularly useful for 3- to 5-day trips, subject to immigration requirements.

ENTEBBE

Best for Longer Uganda Safaris

Entebbe works naturally when the trip also includes Kibale, Queen Elizabeth or Lake Mburo. Domestic flights can reduce road time for premium itineraries.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

Forest trekking gear should be practical. Bring sturdy walking shoes, long trousers, long sleeves, rain protection, long socks, a small daypack, water and manageable camera equipment.

For the complete safari checklist, use our Uganda Safari Packing List.

Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda

Uganda also offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi. This is different from standard trekking and is designed for travelers who want a deeper conservation-focused experience with researchers and habituators.

Under UWA’s tariff effective 1 January 2027, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is US$1,800 for foreign non-residents. Availability is limited compared with standard tracking.

Travelers interested in habituation should tell Tavira before the itinerary is designed because it affects permit planning and the most suitable accommodation area.

Best Uganda Gorilla Safari Combinations

Gorillas + Chimpanzees

Combine Bwindi with Kibale for Uganda’s strongest two-primate route.

Gorillas + Wildlife

Add Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and the Kazinga Channel.

Gorillas + Golden Monkeys

Use Mgahinga and the Virunga region for two distinctive primate experiences.

Gorillas + Lake Bunyonyi

Finish with scenery, boating and a more relaxed pace after trekking.
